This month, Juice Beauty’s founder tells us a little bit about her wonderful company, her inspiration and her plans for the future.
Karen Behnke, wellness entrepreneur and founder of Juice Beauty, has revolutionized all-natural beauty solutions. With products in skincare, hair care and makeup, her unique, juice-based formula is producing powerful, award-winning results derived from certified organic, local ingredients.
Some of Juice Beauty’s strongest products target wrinkles, skin brightness, and unwanted blemishes. Their strength stems from their organic, botanical juice base, which includes aloe, jojoba, grape seed, shea, citrus juices and apple skin.
Through her recent partnership with Gwyneth Paltrow and goop, Karen hopes to expand her mineral-rich, organically tinted makeup line to offer a variety of new products.
The success of her all-natural beauty venture is evident in her following by multiple Youtube beauty vloggers, Matchbox, ABC 7 news and nationally recognized model Cassandra Bankson.
This month, Karen tells us a little bit about her wonderful company, her inspiration and her plans for the future.
When I became pregnant and started to actually read beauty product labels, I couldn’t believe how many potentially harmful ingredients were in high and low end beauty products.
BWB: What was your inspiration for Starting Juice Beauty?
I had been an entrepreneur in the health & wellness field for 18 years when I became pregnant with my first baby at 40. Despite my professional and personal passion for wellness, fitness and beauty, I had never paid attention to the ingredients in the beauty products that I was putting all over my face and body. So when I became pregnant and started to actually read beauty product labels, I couldn’t believe how many potentially harmful ingredients were in high and low end beauty products. I was astounded to learn how few effective personal care products were available. My entrepreneurial “juices” kicked in and I thought, I could do this better!!
BWB: What made you think to use fruits and juices as a basis for your product?
It just never made sense to me that the average beauty product would mostly start with water, which dilutes, or a petroleum derivative, which can be laced with harmful chemicals. My premise was that if we started with rich, organic, botanical juices , and combined them with high efficacy ingredients, we could produce a rich product base with a great moisturizing effect. I really believed that we would achieve one of the highest age-defying, blemish-clearing formulas in skincare! We are so proud that we have amazing clinically validated results to prove this premise.
BWB: Did this skincare solution inspire any other healthy lifestyle changes for you?
Actually, my wellness and fitness background inspired Juice Beauty! I have always felt it important to build a solid wellness and beauty foundation. I like to drink lots of filtered water and lots of organic foods such as wild salmon, whole grains, organic fruits and vegetables and, of course, organic chocolate. I top it all off with daily exercise and lots of love in my life!
I was invited to Gwyneth’s home in Southern California, where we bonded instantly over organic lifestyle habits, entrepreneurship and being a woman in business.
BWB: What initiated the collaboration with Gwyneth and goop?
The collaboration came together because of our shared values. I wanted an authentic business relationship with a celebrity that would fit the eco-authenticity of our company—we have 10 abiding eco values: sourcing certified organic ingredients, sourcing many ingredients locally from the West Coast, et cetera. After an initial great meeting with the Goop CEO Lisa Gersh, I was invited to Gwyneth’s home in Southern California, where we bonded instantly over organic lifestyle habits, entrepreneurship and being a woman in business. We quickly agreed that she would be a perfect fit for the role of Creative Director, Makeup, stepping in to finalize the development of the new, certified-organic makeup collection. Just wait until you see the vibrant, high-payoff pigments for yourself. We have nearly 80 products coming!!
BWB: How has your experience with her been so far? What are some of your favorite beauty/makeup products, outside of Juice Beauty’s of course?
Hmmm…Juice Beauty has skincare, makeup, and a sister brand, Juice Organics hair care. I really don’t need to use any other beauty products other than deodorant and toothpaste! For skincare, I rotate between our Stem Cellular products (targeted focus on wrinkles!) and our Green Apple products (focused on correction, brightness and wrinkle reduction). For makeup, I am now using every lab sample I can get my hands on from our new Phyto-pigments collection.
BWB: As a mother and entrepreneur, what are some of your tricks to balancing such a busy schedule?
My fabulous husband and our great kids! Now that they are 15 and 17, life is a lot easier (only because I somehow have great teenagers… so far). When the kids were little, my husband and I would rise at 5:45am so we could run, bike or swim together. Whenever we went out into the hills, we would make up routines to do up and down our driveway so we could hear if the kids woke up!! After a workout, it was so much easier to handle breakfast and getting them off to school. Although it made for long mornings, exercise gave me energy to get through the day and it was always a great bonding time with my husband, who is a busy cardiologist.
Juice Beauty’s various collection of skincare products, our sister brand, Juice Organics and our soon-to-be Phyto-pigments Makeup are all testaments to our success.
BWB: What did you find was your biggest challenge in this process? Your biggest success?
Patience! It takes great patience to create the purest and most efficacious products. It takes years and years of scientific trials to produce results. Entrepreneurs are not known for their patience so naturally I got frustrated along the way. It was also a challenge to get a world-class team to work with. It takes a bit of scale and notoriety to recruit amazing leaders, so that was no easy process. It was at the start of 2011, when Juice Beauty recruited Jackie Duda, our professional product development and in-house chemist, that the business really started to flourish.
Our biggest success is evident in where we are today. Still, all of us are driven by passion!! Juice Beauty’s various collection of skincare products, our sister brand, Juice Organics and our soon-to-be Phyto-pigments Makeup are all testaments to our success. We are winning multiple skincare awards, housed in a beautiful new sustainable headquarters in Marin County, California and all supported by the most passionate, caring and wonderful team in the world. I am very, very grateful.
