Move your workout outdoors!

Let me take you through some of the workouts I’ll be incorporating into my rotation this summer.

With summer finally here, we’re seizing any opportunity to be outdoors, from lunches in the park to dining al fresco. Many of us spend our days looking at a computer screen so as the days grow longer, it’s time to relish the hours in the sunlight.

While we would like to think that we always do what is best for our well-being, for some of us, going to the gym can be a chore. Whether it’s motivation or scheduling, we’ve all had phases when we needed that extra push.
Luckily, as the weather changes, some of our favorite therapeutic workouts are moving outdoors and new ones are cropping up!
People love to workout outside” says Helaine Knapp, Founder of CityRow, a boutique rowing gym.
CityRow recently offered a rooftop rowing class in partnership with Under Armor and sold out almost immediately!

Let me take you through some of the workouts I’ll be incorporating into my rotation this summer.

For the month of August, CityRow is teaming up with The Montauk Beach House for poolside classes on Saturday mornings.

CityRow
A workout steadily growing in popularity that has us looking long and lean is rowing.
One of the best places to go in NYC and a pioneer of the boutique rowing gym is CityRow.
From their signature class combining rowing intervals with cardio and strength training, to the “Flow” class that pairs rowing cardio with Vinyasa flow yoga, CityRow is sure to give you a total body workout transforming you into a lithe goddess.

Chicago SummerDance
Lollapalooza in July isn’t the only celebration of music to hit Chicago. For the past nineteen summers, from Thursday through Sunday in the evenings, the city hosts Chicago SummerDance in Grant Park’s Spirit of Music Garden.
This three and a half hour session is your time to shine, beginning with an hour of instruction from professional teachers before launching into two hours of live music and freestyle dancing on a 4,900 square foot outdoor dance floor.
Best of all, this energy release is absolutely free of cost, so there is really no reason not to attend!

Meditation and Tai Chi on the High Line
The High Line, the elevated and open-air park, formerly a train route from the 1930s, is a point of pride in the benefits of revitalization for New Yorkers. The Friends of the Highline, the organization behind this renewal, has filled the space with an ever-changing line up of food, art, music and events.

Prefer to focus the mind while in a state of movement? Friends of the High Line offers free classes for that as well! Every Tuesday morning, the Taoist Tai Chi society offers an introductory class in Tai Chi.

On Wednesdays from June through September, allow yourself an hour of serenity before the workday begins with meditation classes led by the Integral Yoga Institute and the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center.

Tai Chai movements are not only believed to aid in clarity of the mind, but also to help in calming the emotions and strengthening the immune system.
In a city as fast paced as New York, I can’t think of a better way to start the day.

Surf Lessons
In recent years, surfing has gotten become more mainstream and people are embracing those toned bodies and sun kissed strands as more than just a look; it’s a lifestyle. With great waves, right in our backyard, there are ample options for all types of New York surfers, from novices to experts.
Try New York Surf School! Based in Rockaway, it’s an easy escape from the city (even accessible by subway!) for a 2-hour group lesson (with two instructors for every five people) for under $100 with equipment provided.

Workout Outdoor

Surfset Fitness
While we hate to admit it, Spring seems to be getting shorter and unfortunately not every day of Summer is sunny with blue skies. So on those chillier or rainy days when your workout moves indoors, why not keep in line with summer vibes and take a class from Surfset Fitness.
Surfset offers surf-inspired fitness classes that are designed to build that envy-inducing lean surfer body. The class combines elements of aerobic fat burning, lean muscle building, and balance & core training in a fun 45-minute routine on top of a custom-made unstable surfboard.
With gyms throughout the country, there’s likely to be one near you, giving you a small taste of what it’s like to ride the waves whether you’re close to the ocean or not.

Whether you’re nearby these locations or not, we hope you’ll be inspired to get outside and get active this summer!
