We recently visited the beautiful International Orange day spa in San Francisco.
It is a one-stop wellness place that includes beauty treatments, yoga and a shop with a great selection of gym clothing and makeup such as RMS or Kjaer Weis.
We met with owner and co-founder Melissa Ferst.
The spa is beautifully designed. What inspired you when you created it?
Along with me, the two other cofounders, Amy Darland and Kary Chendo, and our Creative Director Matt Dick gathered inspiration from many different spas, retail stores, restaurants and resorts around the world.
We wanted to create something that was simple and clean yet luxurious and thought-provoking.
Thus you see the white walls and Brazilian wood flooring with accent pieces such as the chandelier in the lounge (from an old Italian movie theater) and the Japanese vase in the retail shop.
You all have skills and experience in the wellness industry. How did you meet and decide to start this project?
I met Kary in college at U.C. Berkeley, and Kary met Amy post-college in New York working at William Morris.
Kary and Amy were inspired by the spa brand Bliss in New York, and I was a dedicated yogi in San Francisco.
We came together to merge our love of spas and yoga. Back then (over 12 years ago!), the union of spa and yoga did not exist in 1 place – until we founded IO!

With your expertise in Beauty, what advice can you give to our readers?
Take care of your skin! It’s the daily maintenance (or lack thereof) that really adds up over the years.
A good antioxidant, moisturizer, sunscreen and a facial every 4-6 weeks is all you really need.
Stay hydrated. Find something that really works for you and makes you feel beautiful… For me its the In Fiore Calme Oil.

What is your Beauty and Wellness routine?
I have a very busy life between work and kids, so I try to do something for myself everyday to contribute to my overall health and wellbeing. It can be a yoga class, a walk with a friend, a 15-minute power nap or taking a bath (preferably with the IO BATHE bath salts or an In Fiore Body Balm!).
Whether it’s 90 minutes or 5 minutes I try to do something that reinvigorates me and makes me feel good.

A massage or facial at IO and a blow-out at Dry Bar down the street, and I feel like a new woman!
I love to walk the Fillmore steps. The view of the bay and the Golden Gate is breathtaking.
