Interview

Nicolas Cloutier founder of Nose

Wanting to hear a little bit more this unique company, we sat down with Nicolas to chat.

Nicolas Cloutier has seen it all. Up until he founded his luxury perfumery Nose, Nicolas travelled to multiple countries all over the world, eventually settling in Paris, where he turned his vision into a reality. Nicolas’ goal behind Nose was to provide a medium (company) through which customers could find their perfect scent. Their process involves a short questionnaire followed by a blind smelling of an assortment of perfumes. Through his innovative boutique and perfumery, Nicolas seeks to make fragrance less about the product, and more about the person.

We at BWB were fascinated by Nose, and wanting to hear a little bit more the unique company, sat down with Nicolas to chat.

Nose is the only store that has a professional and highly experienced perfumer to help customers select from the hundreds of fragrance brands in our store.

BWB: Tell us more about the unique concept of Nose?

Nose has developed a perfume recommendation technology that in 7 questions can determine your olfactory portrait (what kinds of fragrances fit you), from which we can then recommend customers 5 different perfumes.

Nose is the only store that has a professional and highly experienced perfumer to help customers select from the hundreds of fragrance brands in our store, including the new +20 products we receive each month.

We offer a unique collection of exclusive and confidential brands including perfumes (+450), cosmetics (+250) and home fragrances (+150).

BWB: For whom did you create Nose?

For people who wish to have a tailor-made service to help them find the right beauty products. We also created for those who also wish to have their own confidential and unique scent.

At Nose, we make sure every one of our scents is as unique and creative as possible.

BWB: How did you select the scents that you have in your Paris boutique?

The olfactory memory is the most important memory in the human brain. It brings us back to our childhood, our travels, and so many other memories. Since none of us share the same olfactory souvenirs, why should we smell the same? At Nose, we make sure every one of our scents is as unique and creative as possible. Not all of them have to be liked by everyone.

We have also found that today, so many niche and commercial brands copy the best sellers in the industry. Copied fragrances make no sense! We feel that having a real master perfumer is key. Nose selects each fragrance to offer everyone something different. We have a “library” of perfumes.

BWB: What have been some of your favorite perfumes in the past 10 years?

My favorite has been Tam Dao of Diptyque, before IFRA changed the formula.

BWB: Apart from perfumes what are other beauty products that you like?

I like face care, body care, hair care, grooming products and home fragrances.

BWB: What are some of your favorite places to go in Paris?

For fashion, L’Eclaireur rue Herold and the Centre Commercial. For hospitality and food, the Hotel Bachaumont and their restaurant (their lamb is crazy), as well as Clamato. For their gardens, Jardin du Luxembourg and Palais Royal. Le Salon David Mallett.

BWB: Do you have any new project in the making?

Yes, but they are top secret for now!
