Interview

Fernanda Niven creative director and partner at Parasol

Wearing a rash guard for swimming and outdoor activities is already a must for many of us.
But try and find one that provides total sun protection and is fashionable at the same time.
This used to be mission impossible until the brand Parasol was launched in 2010; and thanks to its new creative director and partner, Fernanda Niven, the 2015 collection is about to become your new healthy fashion addiction!

The elegant New Yorker Fernanda Niven joined the team after successful careers with Vera Wang, Organic Avenue and as an entrepreneur when she designed her own namesake handbag collection in 2000.
Inspired by a love of all things green and her true sense of fashion, teaming up with Parasol was a very natural transition.
We met in the city this Spring to talk about the new collection, summer in the Hamptons and wellness.

The shirts come in bright and fresh colors, jewel tones, bold blues and greens, and fun touches of neon.

BWB: Can you tell us about the Summer 2015 collection?

The Parasol summer collection has a little something for everyone. The shirts come in bright and fresh colors, jewel tones, bold blues and greens, and fun touches of neon. All are easily worn with any color bathing suit or jeans.

BWB: What makes Parasol so unique compared to other brands?

What makes Parasol unique is the fabric we use. Unlike most other brands, there are no chemicals used to make the fabric sun protective. The UPF factor comes from the way the fabric is woven. It never washes off (no chemicals on your skin), and remains sun protective for the life of the garment. Parasol only designs sun protective clothing and we strive to merge fashion and function for our customers and their families.

During the month of June, Parasol will donate a portion of proceeds from a specially selected shirt to the Melanoma Research Alliance. The MRA helps fund research, prevention and cures for melanoma.

BWB: 2015 was a year of many changes for Parasol, can you tell us about some of your new projects?

We have a collaboration with Clinique which will be sold exclusively on clinique.com. It has been a dream come true to partner up with the leading prestige beauty brand to help stay safe in the sun.
We designed a shirt in beautiful Clinique colors with the Clinique logo on the cuff.
In addition, during the month of June, Parasol will donate a portion of proceeds from a specially selected shirt to the Melanoma Research Alliance. The MRA helps fund research, prevention and cures for melanoma.

BWB: What are your ‘sun safety essentials’? Which beauty brands do you use?

I use Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Defense and I use Clinique Sun Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen Body Cream.
I also like Coola Liplux.
Hat, and sunglasses every day!

I go to Provisions in Sag Harbor for healthy lunches, and I love sitting outside at Tutto Il Giorno for dinner.

BWB: You grew up spending summers in the Hamptons, what are your favorite places there for a healthy lunch; dinner with friends and for beauty?

I go to Provisions in Sag Harbor for healthy lunches, and I love sitting outside at Tutto Il Giorno for dinner.
Facials by Thuyen at La Don Spa are my favorite!

BWB: What is your wellness routine there?

I like to exercise outdoors in the summer and prefer to stay out of the gym, as I have all winter to do that. I love to paddle board  in both bay water and the ocean.
I love really long beach walks and bike rides. My favorite ride is from home to the end of Meadow Lane because there is always something new to see!

BWB: This summer, what will you bring with you in your suitcase?

a make-up essential:  Dr Haushka mascara.
– a book:  Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin.
3 songs added to your summer playlist:  California Nights by Best Coast, Archie, Marry Me by Alvvays, Living Zoo by Built to Spill.
