Estée Lauder’s Modern Muse: Misty Copeland

Misty Copeland, principal ballerina at American Ballet Theater, is this Estée Lauder fragrance’s – and all of our – Modern Muse.

Estée Lauder created Modern Muse to represent the personality, style, and distinct femininity of today’s woman. Misty Copeland, principal ballerina at American Ballet Theater, is this fragrance’s – and all of our – Modern Muse.

Through dance, Misty becomes something else, and her magnetic performance beckons her audience to move in their seats, sway their heads, even daydream.

If only words could draw a picture of how Misty moves her body as she dances. She can fly with wings of a bird, move her arms and swell her chest as she lifts herself higher and higher into a soft pink sky. Her whole figure can embody the pulse of a wave as the tug of the moon pulls and releases its foamy water. Through dance, Misty becomes something else, and her magnetic performance beckons her audience to move in their seats, sway their heads, and dance with her.

Every time she enters the theater, Misty tests the power of the human body. Every time she performs, Misty transforms the room into a glittering snowscape, a golden ballroom, an enchanted forest.

She was discovered at the age of 13 by Cindy Bradley, a ballet teacher working at her neighborhood Boys and Girls Club. Misty had been living in a motel with her single mother and five siblings when ballet found her. From that moment onward, she bounded into the world of professional ballet, studying with the San Francisco Ballet School and American Ballet Theater (ABT).

Perhaps the most difficult – and triumphant – moments in her entire career have come with the reminder that she was different from everyone else, but she is proud of that.

And now, Misty has become the first African American principal ballerina to ever dance for the ABT. In 2014, she made history as the first black woman to perform the lead role in ABT’s Swan Lake. Perhaps the most difficult – and triumphant – moments in her entire career have come with the reminder that she was different from everyone else, but she is proud of that.

Misty embodies the modern woman in all of her strength, but also with her softness and beauty. The Modern Muse perfume achieves the same by combining sweet Honeysuckle nectar with Madagascar vanilla and soft Musk that almost dance about your neck.

Estée Lauder selected Misty as their Modern Muse because she is the heroine of her own life, because her creative energy draws people in and inspires so many. Misty embodies the modern woman in all of her strength, but also in her softness and beauty. The Modern Muse perfume achieves the same by combining sweet honeysuckle nectar with Madagascar vanilla and soft musk that almost dance about your neck.

“There’s so much history and legacy when it comes to Estée Lauder,” Misty shares. “And to me, as a dancer, legacy and tradition and history are the most beautiful parts of what I do.”

Now Misty is creating her own legacy, and continues to shatter barriers along the way.
