BWB sat down with Coola, a suncare company, to discuss their organic products and learn about some of the latest trends in the suncare industry.

BWB: What makes Coola organic suncare products different from the many other brands on the market?

At COOLA, we are passionate about making healthy sunscreens that people love to wear! The healthiest and best sunscreen is one that can really be worn on a daily basis. That’s why we offer a variety of 20+ different sunscreens for the unique skins out there! Whether the weather is sunny, partially cloudy or cloudy, sunscreen should be part of your daily regimen.

Chris started investigating proper sun protection and was inspired to create COOLA. He assembled an elite team of industry professionals, including several top FDA experts on sun protection.

BWB: What was the inspiration behind Coola?

Eco-entrepreneur and founder of COOLA, Chris Birchby resides in the heart of sunny and cool San Diego. As a child and the oldest of four boys, Chris spent a lot of time at the beach teaching surfing and windsurfing lessons over the summers. His family sunscreen drawer was full of SPF 4’s and 8’s, and sunburn was a common occurrence. It was not until 2002 when both of Chris’ parents had melanoma scares that Chris started investigating proper sun protection and was inspired to create COOLA. He assembled an elite team of industry professionals, including several top FDA experts on sun protection. Together they created a broad collection of natural sunscreens.

BWB: The Coola scents are divine and a pleasure to apply. The cucumber scent is so refreshing. What are the primary ingredients and their origin?

We use natural cucumber flavor which is especially effective in our new SPF 30 Fresh Cucumber Spray. It smells like spa water! We have wonderful natural fragrance suppliers and always look forward to the new natural scents we discover.

We reformulate about every two years in order to take advantage of innovations that use plant protection.

BWB: One of the common complaints concerning organic sun care is that protection does not last very long. Has Coola helped improve this?

COOLA products can withstand extreme conditions. Each product we create is individually tested for both sun protection and water resistance prior to manufacturing. Additionally, we reformulate about every two years in order to take advantage of innovations that use plant protection. We pride ourselves on sun protection that not only feels great and is good for the environment, but also works.

BWB: There is increased awareness about the importance of sun protection as well as an increased focus on organic products. How do you see the organic suncare industry developing? We love seeing organic brands succeeding in the marketplace. Consumer demand for organic ingredients really helps increase the need for local and sustainable farming. This is something we feel strongly about. Our Farm to Face philosophy is spreading!

Coola Organic Makeup Setting Spray is a no touch, easy spray application so it is a pleasure to use and a perfect size for a beach bag.

BWB: Let’s talk about Coola’s fabulous SPF 30 Organic Makeup Setting Spray. Can you tell us more about that?

It is a weightless, matte finish mist that protects sensitive skin on the face while keeping the makeup looking fresh all day. The spray has a combination of both cucumber and aloe vera extracts to sooth and refresh the skin. We also use Hyaluronic acid to bind the moisture and help soften, tone and rehydrate the skin. It is a no touch, easy spray application so it is a pleasure to use and a perfect size for a beach bag or clutch!

BWB: Coola is producing fantastic suncare products for children now. Please tell us what sets Coola apart in this part of the market?

COOLA Mineral Baby SPF 50 Sunscreen is a 100% natural product. It contains no chemicals or preservatives. This makes it the best product to protect your little one’s skin. It is also water-resistant for 80 minutes (the maximum allowable claim as per FDA regulations) and is rated #1 on the Environmental Working Group’s safest sunscreen list.

You should also always check the water resistant factor of your sunscreen if you intend to use it for sport or in the water.

BWB: Our readers are frequent consumers of suncare products. Please share with us some Coola tips for enjoying life under the sun.

One important thing to remember is to apply sunscreen every day! Remember to reapply if you are spending time outside. You should also always check the water resistant factor of your sunscreen if you intend to use it for sport or in the water. Recent FDA rulings require sunscreens that ARE water resistant to display a water resistant amount of 40 or 80 minutes. No sunscreen is waterproof!
